FHDW being followedLast battle night of 2012

After finally sharing my ideas for our new fighters with Belkov, we discussed various aspects of the proposal, and, as a result, most of our battles had fighters or PFs in them. We also attempted to game via “GameSpy,” mainly because I remember that it would allow the host to insert AI teams into the game where GameRanger won’t; but GameSpy detected a firewall issue that we didn’t feel like worrying about, so went back to GameRanger.

The first battle was lopsided, his FireHawk vs my F-HDW. My F-111 got lost midway thru, so I was just flying around waiting for the inevitable. I swear I was far enough from the planet, but I guess not. We then switched to PFs, which I am happy to say we were both able to launch and use. Unfortunately for me, his PFs are tougher and/or mine are weaker; after a rapidly changing battle pass, I had a BCS with no support, and his wingmen and PFs were still with his KDP. I found the border and made a successful dash for it

F-BCS warping out

We tried again with PFs, and this time I thought I was smart – I got 2 NPFTs and loaded them up with PF-A & Ds, plus a FFR. Belkov had a TH and a SBH. I let my wingman PFT launch PFs when it wanted to, hoping it would soften the targets for the second wave. That didn’t work so well, but mainly because of my PFs rapid attrition rate. One of the Starhawks used by Belkov was the B variant; in this shiplist it has an impressive 4 Plasma-Fs. I saved 2 PFs for when we got to knife-fighting range; another miscalculation on my part, because one was obliterated within seconds of being launched. For the second time that night, “success” for me was making it to the border with a pack of ships & PFs behind me.

We went for a Tiny Fest for the last battle, my Feds vs Klingons. I got a lucky draw in the first wave, a FFB versus a Bird Of Prey, and I felt that I kept an upper hand for most of the re-spawns. When our final ships were a NAC  against an older AD6 I thought I would prevail, but, well, sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes… I’m still not sure what went wrong for me, a battlepass that got too close or getting hammered by t-bombs at one point. There was a LOT of ADD flak in the ether and few missiles hitting in that round, I must say.

That aside, some fun gaming occurred. I feel more than ready now to implement a new line of ships and fighters (hopefully more balanced too), and to move us from the random “let’s you and me fight” battles into a campaign of some sort.

Fighter thoughts 11212.26

After giving it some more thought, some additional notes on the Fed fighters in the last game…

It was the F14C that vexed Belkov the most; at the time I agreed the BPV was too low but it wasn’t as low as I feared – 9 instead of 6. The specs on it are:

  • F-14C Spd 30, 1xPhG FX, 1xDroI(2 shots), 1xDroI(2 shots), 4xDroVI(1 shot) Dmg 12 BPV 11

In SFB, a F14C with 2xI, 2xVI and 4xIII Drones runs 15, plus 1 for the boosterpacks for speed 30. However, the BIG difference in SFC (besides the AI control of fighters) is that the fighter drones work differently, and, according to the literature, do ¼ damage against ships. While in game, a fighter group of 4 letting loose a swarm of 12 drones is scary, if they are doing a max of 12 damage per fighter, as opposed to the ship killing 38 each in SFB. I’ll have to do some more testing to confirm this ¼ damage concept, but I believe that fighter drones are less powerful.

At 9 BPV, the F14C as currently fielded is too low, and should be 12-13 at least, more comparable to the standard Raven, Jay, etc fighters. Since I am about to release the new 2013 ship and fighter list, I’ll be adjusting all the fighters anyway, and combat will be the best playtesting I can come up with.

  • Fighter Drone I does 4 damage against ships
  • Fighter Drone VI does 8 damage against ships
  • Fighter can carry DroneC rack, fires full strength drones (12)

  • Fighter Drone I does 4 damage against a fighter made by me
  • Fighter Drone VI does 8 damage against a fighter made by me

I was a little thrown by the fact that the Fighter Drones do the same damage against fighters as they do ships; planning a little more playtesting to make sure it wasn’t the fighter I made that caused that.

Additional Confirmation

The 4 & 8 damage ratings on fighter drones seems consistent, doing that to both fighters and ships. I’m not sure if the update changed this and if there’s a way around it.

Combat Log 11212.22

Four battles on a Saturday night, First 3 were Free4Alls, the last one a Fest Light.

A-Free, 350 BPV. Fed CVB with F14C & Pol+ VS Col SP: & 2 SEA. The F14s did a number on the SPL early on, so the CVB was able to do some real damage

B-Free, 1200 BPV. Fed BB, XDD, and SCS w/ F18, F14, A10 & Raven.III VS Col Battlestar 5m & SPJ. After some jockeying, the SPJ was taken out and constant sniping by the fighters led to a rare sight, the aft end of Invincible as it was running away

C-Free, 250 BPV. Hyd XDD & Fed FSPh VS Col SPU. Another short-lived Colonial ship.

In both A & C we had crashes the first time we played them. After some troubleshooting, I found that Cabot was running a different (newer) shiplist. I had introduced some new ships but thought we had reverted to an earlier list; hopefully we can resolve this by just going on to a brand-new list in 2013.

The last battle of the night was a Battefest Light; I chose it because sometimes the transitions between frigates and cruisers, and cruisers and dreadnaughts, can create interesting tactical situations. One drawback was that I left the era set to “Advanced,” which meant X ships for both of us, but at least it was a fair fight.

in the end the tally was 3 for Montel, 1 for Cabot. We spent some time chatting about some other intredimensional activities, which I enjoy, including the next so-called “trek” film, but the late hour and a failing battery on the communicator ended the evening at 3 hours and 46 minutes.
